You can expect the unexpected in Enga

Source: Letters, The National - Monday 10th October, 2011
PAPUA New Guinea is the known as the Land of the Unexpected.
It has many diverse and rich cultures, languages and traditions.
Like PNG, Enga is also one place where you can expect the unexpected.
I give four examples.
l    The recent power struggle was basically between two Engan MPs and it resulted with a change of government;
l    It is leading the way
in education as it has the most children in schools and tertiary institutions and many of its schools are in the top 10 in the country;
l    Who would have expected an Engan school to win the recent national school debate competition? Sir Tei Abal Secondary School proved the critics wrong and put Enga on the map; and
l    I am not from Enga and I have been here for four years. I must say it is one of the most peaceful places. I find this totally unexpected as Enga is known as a tribal fighting zone and more people are killed here than anywhere else in PNG. But I believe if you do not cause trouble, no harm will come to you.
